Younger non-Indigenous Australians show greater participation compared with the broader non-Indigenous community.

Truth-telling supports stronger relationships and mutual respect through shared understandings of our past and how it shapes the present. Truth-telling is fundamental to historical acceptance, one of the five dimensions that guides Reconciliation Australia’s work.

The Australian Reconciliation Barometer (ARB) is the only survey in Australia tracking reconciliation progress between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians.

Truth-telling covers a range of activities that enable a fuller and more accurate account of Australia’s history. This can include inquiries, commissions, apologies, reviews of institutional policies and practices, or more local level events, publications, renaming, signage, statues and public art.

The Truth-telling and Historical Acceptance Snapshot shows that:

  • Strong support for truth-telling is evident across all states and territories with 71% of non-Indigenous people believing it to be an important element for progressing reconciliation (81% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples)
  • 14% of 18–24-year-old non-Indigenous people and 21% of 25–34-year-olds have participated in a local truth-telling activity in the past year (9% of non-Indigenous people of all ages)
  • 60% of non-Indigenous people believe they have a high level of knowledge about Australia’s colonial history (73% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples).

To track how Australia is going on its reconciliation journey we undertake two major reconciliation surveys every two years.

The Australian Reconciliation Barometer (ARB) is the only survey in Australia that measures the progress of reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-Indigenous Australians.

Since 2012, the Workplace Reconciliation Barometer (WRB) has measured perceptions and attitudes of employees in organisations with a Reconciliation Action Plan.

Comparing the findings from both surveys demonstrates the positive impact RAPs are having – fostering stronger relationships, increasing respect, and creating opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The 2024 WRB Reconciliation Snapshot shows:

  • 94% of WRB respondents believe the relationship between non‑Indigenous and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is important for the nation (85% in the ARB).
  • 70% of RAP employees have higher knowledge of the history of colonial Australia than the general community (60% in the ARB).
  • 88% of RAP employees believe that it is important to undertake truth‑telling to acknowledge the reality of Australia’s shared history (71% in ARB).

The Australian Reconciliation Barometer (ARB) is a national research survey – conducted every two years – that looks at the relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians, and how perceptions affect progress towards reconciliation.

The 2022 ARB surveyed a national sample of 532 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and 1990 general community members, across all states and territories.

Both the general community sample and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sample are weighted to be representative in terms of age group, gender and location (state and territory populations), as per Australian Bureau of Statistics 2021 Census data.

The 2022 reports shows that:

  • As in previous years, almost all Australians–Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and general community members–believe the relationship between each other is important.
  • Nearly all Australians want Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to have a say in their own affairs- with a significant increase in support for a treaty.
  • Mutual trust between First Nations people and other Australians is strong.
  • A majority believe it is important to undertake formal truth-telling processes in relation to Australia’s shared history
